“Nature is doing her best each moment to make us well. She exists for no other end. Do not resist. With the least inclination to be well, we should not be sick.” Henry David Thoreau

A revolution is occurring in health care, transformation is in the air. The purpose of our lives and the direction of society are no longer what they were, as the basis of our collective reality and beliefs changes. A fundamental change in perspective and context is occurring throughout society and as a result much has changed in the field of herbalism and holistic healing.

As people in all fields of life explore the implications of a holistic and ecological world view, medicine is at the forefront. We have gone beyond the ideal of "treating the whole animal and not the symptoms" to begin to articulate the definition of a holistic approach to health.

There is really one healing force in existence and that is Nature herself, which means the inherent restorative power of the organism to overcome disease. Herbal medicine address the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of those who seek care. It views health as a positive state, not the absence of disease and emphasizes the uniqueness of the individual and the importance of tailoring treatment to fit each need. The promotion of health and the prevention of disease is a priority.

Herbal medicine has much to contribute to the development of a holistic health service, using healing plants provided by nature. Herbal medicine, while being a valid and effective tool, can also be part of a personal and even social transformation.

Herbs can be used freely and safely as part of one's lifestyle without thinking of them as 'medicines'. For specific health needs, their best use would be preventative -- to prevent problems appearing. There are specific herbs that strengthen and tone specific organs and systems. By using herbs it may well be possible to overcome any weakness.

With the pet sector lagging the human sector by about two years, we’re seeing more and more herbal supplements available for pets. For humans, herbal products can do everything from improving memory to improving your mood to helping you lose weight. Like most events in human medicine, this movement has carried over into veterinary medicine, and a number of herbal supplements are now available to animals.

The difference between herbal and prescription treatments may not as large as you may think. Medications have been derived from plants for at least 3000 years, and 25 percent of our prescription drugs still are. Many of the drugs that are now synthesized originated from plants at some point. Clearly, plant-based medications are effective, but they can’t be patented. So synthetic copies are made by pharmaceutical companies that are then sold through prescription. The problem with synthetic drugs is that they generally have more side effects that what was originally being helped with the original drug.

One main advantage to herbal medicines is that they contain materials from the entire plant. Traditional prescriptions generally extract and concentrate one active chemical from a plant, which is a waste of valuable nutrients. Plants can contain sugars, minerals, proteins, and a host of other chemicals that interact with the active chemical in a variety of ways--they may concentrate or intensify its effect, they may make it easier to digest or absorb, or they may lessen its harsh or toxic side effects. Herbal medicine is most effective in its natural state, when it contains all of these chemicals, rather than after it has been processed. That is because they are natural and unprocessed, herbal remedies like pau d’Arco and valerian root have been able to achieve cures where traditional medicines have failed.

In fact, due to whole-food make up and relative safety, herbal medicines are often considered more of a nutritional supplement than a medication--the Food and Drug Administration labels them as "nutraceuticals," and does not regulate them as drugs. Many holistic veterinarians see nutraceuticals as extension of an animal's natural diet, adding to the nutrition animals should be getting from their environment but aren't getting from their processed pet food. They are generally safe, and usually cause few side effects.
